Overview
Startup Roots Fellows will be placed in two types of internship positions: the Business Fellowship or the Engineering Fellowship. While generically described here, each Fellows' experience will focus on one or two core projects that they will complete over the course of the program, under the direction of the startup they work for. Yet, as is the case for anyone working in a startup, Fellows may be expected to help out in areas outside of their project area, thus allowing them to fully immerse in the workings of an early stage startup company.
The Engineering Fellowship
An engineer for a Startup Roots company will get the opportunity to work on a project in a fast-growing startup. That means creating an application or feature that provides real value to the end-user, an opportunity that is rarely available to those interning in larger companies. We'll ensure that the startup you intern at will provide you with a complex, challenging and meaningful project that is educational and interesting to you. Furthermore, you'll get the chance to spend some of your time assisting the development team of the core product. Imagine developing one of the future technologies of our day this summer - that's what you'll be doing! You'll also get a chance to engage in the culture of the startup and understand how a development team works in the early stages.
Qualifications
- Pursuing a B.S. degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields at a top-tier university
- Experience in web development, C++, Java, or other programming languages
- Strong technical prowess, including understanding of algorithms, systems architecture, and end-user experience
- Expertise in feature definition, design, and feasibility
- Demonstrate flexibility, a willingness to learn, and a tenacity at solving complex problems
The Business Fellowship
The "business guy" at a startup does pretty much everything, and inevitably so will a business intern. You may do product management, marketing, sales and business development. Though nebulous, this is one of the most exciting times to be on the business side of things. You'll be involved in high-profile decisions that will make or break a startup's future. You will interface with customers; learn their pain points and work on strategies to solve them. Business Fellows may attend the startup's booths at events or spread the word via social media marketing. Ultimately, that's the beauty of the startup: it's all hands on deck and you'll get a chance to be one of those hands.
Qualifications
- Pursuing a Bachelor's degree at a top-tier, accredited 4-year university
- Experience in marketing, product management or business development
- Show a penchant for entrepreneurial activity
- Have excellent spoken and written communication skills
- Demonstrate a keen understanding of markets and customers, an ability to solve complex problems and a knack for executing on ambitious goals
